Fun on the River
Nothing in the world compares to an afternoon spent canoeing, kayaking, floating, or embarking on an SUP journey by standup paddle boarding on the mighty Deschutes. This crystal-clear river winds its way through the heart of the city, so you can savor your Bend sightseeing with a side of aquatic adventure. The new Bend Whitewater Park opened September 2015 at the Colorado Avenue Dam on the Deschutes River. Open to the public and free for all to enjoy, this state-of-the-art park features a floater's channel, a nature habitat channel, and a whitewater channel with waves created by electronically controlled pneumatic bladders.
Whether you`re craving a lazy canoe float on calm water, a thrilling kayak ride through churning whitewater, or something in between, we promise you`ll find the aquatic adventure of your dreams in Bend! |
Floating the Deschutes River is a must in the summer months! The easiest place to kick off your river float is from Riverbend Park, though another great spot is Farewell Bend Park just a little upstream on the opposite shore just under the Bill Healy Memorial Bridge. Either place offers a safe, sandy shore for you to launch your air mattress, float tube, or raft. |
Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe is right on the river! Locally owned and operated rental, retail, and education center located just down stream from the Old Mill District where Colorado Ave. crosses the river. Rent tubes, stand up paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes and put your vessel in the water right behind the store. Enjoy a half or full day tour of the pristine sections of the Upper Deschutes River, or improve your skills with a lesson from one of our ACA-certified instructors. |
There`s no better way to enjoy a hot summer day in Bend than floating, canoeing, kayking or paddling on the river like the locals do!

The Deschutes River and its tributaries provide sustenance for a plethora of aquatic wildlife, draw tourists who support our economy, and provide a playground for those who recreate in their waters or along their banks. The rivers of the Deschutes Basin truly define this region and are considered by many as our most treasured natural asset.
Yet, beautiful as they may appear, our rivers are challenged by low streamflow in certain seasons, and by poor water quality. Learn more by clicking the link below. |
